Horsetail

Horsetail

The plant, which is common above all in humid places, is rich in silica which is found in the cell walls above all of the skin and which is easily noticeable if the surface of the plant is touched with the fingers. Horsetail powder is used as an abrasive. The presence of mineral salts (18-20%) is also important, as well as flavonoids, saponins, organic acids, phytosterols, vitamin C and alkaloids in trace form. It is indicated essentially for its diuretic and mineralizing properties, to which its hemostatic and anti-anaemic uses can be added. The diuretic effect is thought to be due to the mineral substances, the aliphatic acids, the derivatives of cinnamic acid and above all the flavonoids. Applied locally, it also has healing properties.
